SCULPTURE

Nakawe (Mother of the Earth) : Sacred Beings

The life-sized cast of this Parasaurolophus dinosaur is adorned with glass beads, set in resin by hand by Fuentes with indigenous Wixarika artists, Lino Kuruxi Lopez and Pablo Muwieri Huta Carrillo.

The designs depict an intricate spiritual universe, bringing together elements from the natural and cosmic worlds, and paying homage to Nakawe, the Wixarika’s mythological Mother of the Earth. Nakawe’s adornments also include shells and fossils from the Potomac River, in recognition of the Piscataway people.
